On the California the pop-top roof is opened by hand, using the scissor hinges and the H-shaped brackets at the front. With a load on the roof, or with the van parked on a slope, lifting it becomes hard work. The solution is to add two gas struts, similar to the ones that hold up the tailgates of cars.
